Italian Heroines: Literature, Gender, and the Construction of the Nation

Scholarship on Italian nationhood has historically focused on heroes rather than on heroines, in line with the established gendered dialectical relationship between the female nation (who nurtures those who fight for her), and the male patriot, who both adores and possesses her. However, it is argued that Italian literary heroines prove at least as productive as heroes, if not more, when it comes to generating alternative views on the nation. This essay offers an introduction to a themed issue that aims to fill this scholarly gap in relation to ideas about the Italian nation and nationhood.

Between 1860 and 1950 Italian architecture had the task of building the modern image of a young nation. Politics asked to architects to convey, through their work, identity messages to the collectivity. This process was particularly present during the period of fascism (1922- 1943), at the disposal of the government of Benito Mussolini. Through strong messages deeply rooted to the ancient Roman tradition, fascism sought to restore a national identity that would guarantee the duration of the regime. This paper focuses on the story of two dark-skinned Italians written for Giorgio Marincola by Carlo Costa and Lorenzo Teodonio in Razza partigiana and for his sister Isabella by Wu Ming 2 and Antar Mohamed in Timira. Romanzo meticcio. The events of their lives as well as many other aspects of our colonial neocolonial and postcolonial history have re-emerged from the darkness in which they had been hidden only in the last fifteen years thanks to the reopening of the archives allowing to re-discuss many of the aspects that in the pages of History as well as in those of literature had been told in another way.
